Getting Involved with Events at BCIT

Hello all,
BCIT can be demanding, but it's important to recognize your long term goals after the completion of your program.  Make an effort to get involved in as many clubs and events as you can.

The ASHRAE October 11th dinner-meeting at the Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver is a great place to meet potential employers and learn about industry standards.  Randy Zimmerman will be presenting on improving acoustics in duct systems.  Poor acoustic performance can decrease the comfort of occupants and are typically indicative of excessive air velocity.  Tips on sizing and material selection can be applied directly to your future designs and improve your ability to solve problems in pre-existing systems.

Working on my Baja Capstone project from last year.
I am also part of BCIT Racing: Baja, which was great not only for learning about vehicles but also developing some proficiency with power tools, welders, general fabrication techniques and solid design practices.

Engineers without Boarders (EWB) is a wonderful organisation that is committed to helping people in need.

Life after BCIT is longer than life in BCIT, so take advantage of events such as the Western Engineering Competition which is going to take place at BCIT this year.  Presentation Idol is a great place to practice your presenting and public speaking skills.

Make the most of your time here and get involved!

Cheers,
Todd Backus

Welcome Class of 2017-18

Hello all,
My name is Todd Backus, I am the new president of the BCIT ASHRAE Student Chapter.
Prior to attending the mechanical engineering degree program at BCIT, I worked as an HVAC designer and installer, primarily for custom residential buildings.  I completed a red seal ticket as a sheet-metal journeyman in 2009.  I sat on the board of directors of the Thermal Environmental Comfort Association (TECA) for two years where I worked on several courses aimed at improving trade practises.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if I can offer some technical input on forced air systems.

Viessmann tour for Mechanical Engineering Students

On behalf of all Mechanical engineering students I would like to thank Viessmann representatives for having all of us over at the Viessmann Langley location, on  November 17th.

The tour and the presentation were very educational and helpful. The visuals were fantastic. The mechanical display room is well designed and gave all of us a chance to see Cast Iron, Fire Tube and Condensing boilers as well as the pipe layout and different components of the system.

Some boilers had sections removed for better visuals. At the main entrance of the building, they also had on display some of the large solar panels that Viessman were working on and it helped provide a real world example of how these panels worked. Representative was very responsive to any questions students had and gave knowledgeable answers. The second part of the tour was the presentation about the Viessmann Factory, their products, solar power systems, boiler components and bio-mass furnaces as well as innovations in HVAC. The educator was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject covered. All the students found the presentation to be very educational and interesting, the company supplied free t-shirts and refreshments for all.

Overall all the students had great time on this tour and enjoyed being there.
